Nightfall came quickly, the darkness first slithering out from the trees, then fading upward as the sun made its descent. Once the horses were rested, and we were sure we wouldn’t run into an angry mob, we’d ridden east toward Bordtham. There Steifan and Tholdri would wait while I met with Karpov. If morning came and I did not return, they’d search for me.

I could see the warm yellow light of the village in the distance. Part of me dreaded reaching it to leave my companions behind, but the other part, the dark pit of rage in my stomach, had been waiting eagerly for this night to come.

Well, perhaps not this night, but the night I would have my vengeance.

Tholdri was watching me. His eyes lightly reflected the moonlight, making him appear almost supernatural. “Are you sure about this, Lyss? I don’t feel good about waiting in the village while you meet him.”

I nodded. “Karpov will not speak to me if he sees you. I cannot lose this opportunity.”

He glanced at the nearing village, then back to me. “You mean the opportunity to slay Karpov, right? Not to face Asher.”

“Of course,” I answered curtly.

“You’re a terrible liar.”

I sighed heavily. “When I plan to face Asher, you will know, I swear it.” And I meant what I said. He couldn’t divert me from my path, but he’d at least not be taken by surprise.

I looked past Tholdri to Steifan, hunched with a pensive expression atop his horse’s back. “You seem to be thinking terribly hard about something,” I accused.

He startled, then blinked at me. “I’m tired. Nothing more.”

I didn’t have time to worry about it. Bordtham might be near, but my ride was only just beginning. I had to reach the crypt by midnight.

When it was time to diverge, Tholdri halted his horse and turned to me. “If you get yourself killed, know this night will haunt me for the rest of my life, Lyss.”

I smiled softly. “I’ll be careful, I swear it. If Karpov wanted me dead, I’d already be dead.” I didn’t add that if he suspected me of trickery, he might still kill me. No sense in worrying Tholdri further.

He watched me for a moment longer. “I’ll see you soon, then.”

I nodded, then turned my horse away before he could start another argument. I would attend this meeting regardless. Karpov was the only one who could lead me to Asher.

I shook my head as I rode out into the darkness, away from the comforting lights of Bordtham. Perhaps that wasn’t quite true. I’d nearly died last night, and Asher had come. If I’d been alone, would he have approached me?

It didn’t really matter now. Karpov had the key to me catching Asher unawares. Now if only I had the key to doing the same to Karpov. He’d killed my uncle, a highly trained hunter. If I hoped to stand a chance, I’d have to outwit a being that had survived centuries.

The odds were most certainly not in my favor.
